Parang Motif Exploration

Pattern Study & Cultural Motif Exploration
2025
This project explores a batik motif traditionally reserved for Javanese royalty, the parang motif. The process began with collecting and documenting existing variations of the motif, which were then compiled into a catalogue. I then experimented with recreating the patterns through lino cut and sketching, while also developing my own interpretations of the motif.

Through this exploration, I learnt that the Parang motif was inspired by ocean waves, symbolising an unbreakable spirit and blessing those who wore it with strength and determination. Taking a more dynamic approach, I drew inspiration from the movement and patterns formed by sand as it gets carved by ocean waves. Using TouchDesigner, I mimicked these movements and applied them to the Parang motif.
